What's The Call Thursday

Ready for the ride... Here we go!
Situation: Runner on 1st with no out. Batter hits a pop fly to F3. R1 stays of the bag. F3 who is attempting to field the ball drifts into R1 who is standing on the bag. R1 actually bends down and covers head due to ball possibly hitting him. The ball probably would have hit the bag if allowed to fall. The ball hits the fielder's glove over Fair territory directly over the bag and is dropped.

What is the call?

  1. foul ball.. its not where the fielder touches it its where you believe the ball is before it is touched.. if its in foul territory and is touched.. its still foul.. and R1 is not interfering with the play he has a right to the bag at first.. the ball is foul

  2. I agree. Foul ball. Ball was touched in foul territory and dropped. R1 indeed does have a right to the base, so there's no interference there. All you have is the foul ball.
    Good job, Kasey!

Fair ball. The runner on first does not have to give up first, until that bal is dropped and he is now forced to vacate to second and B/R has the opportunity to advance to first. If the defense is thinking, they should tag R1 once he vacates first and tag the bag for a force on the B/R and a DP. Or, they can make throw to second for a force on R1 and the opportunity for a DP still exists, if the B/R is slow getting to first.

It's a circus! All IF YOU DON"T HAVE AN INTERFERENCE CALL.

  5. Yep, exactly what Ken said. You wouldn't have an interference until the ball is dropped, at which point the runner is forced to vacate. And you only get the interference if and only if there is legitimate interference by R1 on his way to 2nd base.
I agree, it's a complete circus, so HOPE that you get the interference call (or maybe that's just me?)!
Good edit Ricky, this version adds a twist to it!

  6. one more twist is a judgment call to be made as to whether the fielder intentionally dropped the ball or not, thus negating the double play and having a dead ball with only one out and R1 staying at first. This is purely a judgment by the umpire as to intent.

  9. first, there is no interference due to r1 having the right to the base. second, since it was touched fair by the fielder, it is fair. the play is live and whatever happens from this point on happens.
