What's The Call Thursday

Lets roll. Please rule reference if you can (or case book)

Batter drag bunts down 1st Baseline. Batter drops bat properly on the fair side of the line. Ball is rolling near the line about 2 inches fair, strikes the bat lying on the ground, and settles on foul ground.
Whats the call?

  2. Fair Ball
    Case book 2.5.1 sit E:C

    Foul ball
Case book 2.16.1 sit D the bat is considered part of the field and as such the ball comes to rest in foul territory before passing first base thus by definition foul.

This need further clarification because the two cases contradict each other. I personally would lean toward foul and would be able to explain this easier to a coach.

  3. Dana, great study !
I'm sure glad this didn't happen in one of my games !!
I didn't read the case book, but did wonder if the bat is actually considered "equipment". It does seem logical that it is the batter's equipment & 2-3 does appear to confirm it is equipment. There is an exception about "Loose Equipment" in 2-3-7.

From the case book, 2.16.1 sit D does appear to be the problem. Apparently it was not written by the same person who wrote 2.5.1 sit E. 2.5.1 sit E, conforms perfectly to 2-5-1-f.

Since the "Batter drops bat properly"; it might be said that he "intentionally" placed the bat & therefore it would be fair. Additionally, I don't believe (2-5-1, 2-8-1, 8-4-1d) supports that the bat is part of the playing field, unless it could be considered to be "Loose" equipment. 2-42 does not list equipment as an option to being part of the playing field.

Good salesmenship is the answer to this one !!
